May 24, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes women’s golf team wrapped up their four-round NAIA championship tournament, hosted at Wilderness Ridge in Lincoln, Neb from May 21-24.
The Vikes finished 13th overall with a score of 124-over 1276.
Oklahoma City University took top honours with a team score of 72-over 1224 thanks to Jessica Schiele and Elia Folch, who came one-two with scores of 7-over 295 and 12-over 300, respectively.
For the Vikes, Emily Nicol came from behind to tie senior Megan Woodland in 33rd, as the pair both carded 28-over 316 after four rounds of play. Nicol impressed in round four with a 77, while Woodland was 79-77-77-83 over the four rounds.
“The girls struggled on a couple of rounds but improved today, finishing pretty much where they were ranked,” said Vikes golf head coach Bryan Carbery. “Emily was a breath of fresh air for us this tournament. She played really well and has unbelievable potential.”
Brynn Tomie was next up for the Vikes, as she finished the tournament tied for 38th with a score of 29-over 317 (81-75-84-77). Also competing for the Vikes was Michaela Misener, who finished tied for 73rd with a score of 44-over 332 (83-83-84-83), while Michaela Abey was three strokes behind with 47-over 335 (84-89-82-80).
“Unfortunately the wind was a big factor this tournament but the girls did what they could,” added Carbery. “Megan seemed to lose her swing this week but she is such a great competitor. I know she will turn it around for next week at Canadian’s.”
The Vikes are already on route from Nebraska to Quebec for the Canadian University/College national championship hosted May 28-31 at Club de golf Val des Lacs in Ste-Sophie, Que.
