Rinx Minx Roller Girls

Story and Photos by Jim Hockley (ISN)

May 26, 2013, (ISN) – What sport do you know where there are blockers, a jammer, lots of tumbles, elbows, sprinting, stopping, 7 refs, and almost as many officials, creative names like Ruby Whipper, Heavens2Gretzky, Velvita Slicer and Dar the Starr.

Yes, its womens Roller Derby and they love it! It’s not only a high velocity game, but full of fun and friendship. With all the refs and officials, I found it a little difficult to figure out all of the hand signals going on, so I just kept taking photos and enjoyed the game.

It’s very much an up and coming revival sport from the 50’s and 60’s and it is very easy to get hooked on. For more info regarding the team nearest you go to www.rinkminxrollergirls.com.

You do not have to be a great skater to join.

And oh yes…..The images are from the May 25 game at the Comox Valley Rec Center where the Home Club, Rink Minx defeated the Margarita Villains from Victoria 239 – 191
