May 30, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – First weather, then darkness halted the second round of the University of Victoria Vikes men’s golf team at the 2013 Canadian University/College golf championship hosted at Val des Lacs Golf Club in Ste-Sophie, Que.
The men’s field, who began in the afternoon after the women, had play suspended for unplayable course conditions from heavy rain and upon restart nearly two hours later, could not continue due to darkness.
At the time of suspension 21 players were still on the course. Play continued this morning, May 30, and both the second and third rounds will be completed. After the first two rounds, the Vikes men dropped to 10th place despite improving their round one score by two strokes. The Vikes are currently 38-over 606 (304-302), while the UBC Thunderbirds hold the lead at 10-over 578 (291-287).
Individually, Jesse Teron and Matthew Broughton lead the Vikes, as both are tied in 38th. Jesse Teron was 4-over 75 in round two, carding two birdies to have a two-round score of 9-over 151. Broughton was identical on day two and picked up two birdies on the back nine.
Alex Cartwright finished round two tied for 45th with an overall score of 10-over 152. Cartwright improved his day-two score by two strokes earning a 4-over 75. Third year Carson Kallis struggled with the weather and conditions and as a result scored 7-over 78 in his second round. Kallis drops to 51st with an overall score of 11-over 153.
Also competing for the Vikes is Jamie Cartwright who was consistent with day one and two scores of 78 and 77 to finish 13-over 155 and tied for 58th.
Third-round play continues today for the field of 105 Canadian University and College golfers that are still led by Laval’s Ugo Coussaud. Coussaud is currently 7-under 135 (66-69) and three strokes ahead of Holland College’s Eric Locke who is at 4-under 138 (69-69).
