May 31, 2013, Campinas, Brazil (ISN) – Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta., and Ben Saxton of Calgary were involved in another close match on Friday but finally loss to a Norwegian pair to conclude round robin action at the FIVB World Cup beach volleyball tournament.
The Canadians end the round robin at 2-2 to finish third in their pool to just fall short of advancing to the semifinals (top-two in each of the two pools).
The Canadians improved to 2-1 early Friday defeating Leo Williams and Philip Gabathuler of Africa 21-17, 21-14. Then with a potential spot in the semi on the line, Schalk and Saxton lost 21-18, 33-31 to Geir Eithun and Iver Andreas Horrem of Norway.
Germans Jonathan Erdmann and Kay Matysik and Jacob Gibb and Casey Patterson of the U.S., were the top-two teams in the pool.
Schalk and Saxton now head to Europe for five weeks where they will play in three events on the FIVB World Tour circuit as well as the FIVB World Championships
