The Hurricane Fight League (HFL)started out in 2008 as the brain child of owner and head instructor of Canada’s Best Karate, Sensei Leigh Mueller. The idea was to have regular amateur kickboxing and MMA fights between other martial arts schools in town and on the island. These fights, called ‘smokers,’ allowed students to gain ring experience in a safe environment as well as learn from each other and have fun all at the same time. Any first time fighter must wear full protective gear (helmet, 16 oz boxing gloves, and shin guards) to eliminate any major injuries. This author himself had his first fight at one of the early HFL events. While I lost the fight, it was a valuable experience and very important to my own training.

The International Sports Karate Association (ISKA) contacted Leigh Mueller about the Hurricane Fight League and officially sanctioned the events on June 7, 2009. The sanction allows participants to win ISKA Tiles when competing in an HFL event. Additionally, the HFL has their own title belts for non-ISKA fights.

Since its inception, there have been 14 HFL events with participants from local schools such as Peterec’s Kicboxing and Island MMA and others, get a chance to get into the ring. Many of these fighters go on to other events such as the Aggression Fight Championship (AFC). Other fighters are content to enjoy participating in the HFL only and come back for many fights and even have a large group of fans.

It’s Canada’s Best Karate’s Suraj Bangarh’s dream to compete in a K-1 Kickboxing fight card. Suraj is well on his way having won the ISKA Light Welter Weight World Title in the May 31st event.
The May 31st fight card featured 12 fights between very competitive contenders and also included 2 boxing matches and 3 exhibition fights (fights for experience only, no winner is declared), one of which featured a women’s match for the first time in HFL history.
This HFL Event was very special as it featured 2 ISKA World Title matches. The first between Canada’s Best Karate student, Suraj Bangarh, and Kayne Young all the way from New Zealand. The second world title fight between Australia’s Kalon Milne and Canada’s Best Karate owner, Leigh Mueller. Both Suraj and Leigh were victorious after 5 rounds of gruelling battle.
