June 2, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The Peninsula Co-op Highlanders headed to the mainland to face Abbotsford FC for an afternoon match that saw the women’s team notch their second win of the season.
Following their first win of the season the Highlanders had struggled to finish on their chances, a situation that was remedied in a match that saw three goals for the women. The Highlanders carried the play in the opening half but would surrender the opening goal of the match in the 40th minute. Former Highlander Megan Webster converting on one of two shots that the Highlanders allowed in the first half.
“We gave up the first goal, which I was not happy about,” said Head Coach Dave Dew. “A bit of a breakdown, a couple combinations of mistakes, and all of a sudden it was in the back of the net.”
Three minutes after giving up the goal, the Highlanders responded, with Liz Hansen finding the back of the net to even it up heading into halftime.
Dew made changes for the second half, inserting Kristen Livingstone, Shannon Elder, Amy Lawrence and Nikky Turner. Livingstone would make her presence felt, converting a header seven minutes in on a cross-pass from Elder to put the Highlanders up 2-1. Jackie Harrison followed with a goal of her own at 55-minutes when Livingstone threw a ball up the middle of the field, allowing Harrison to go in one-on-one with the Abbotsford FC goalkeeper, firing it into the back of the net to put the Highlanders up 3-1, a lead that would hold for the remainder of the match.
“We really stepped up, in the second half especially,” said Dew. “The overall game was good, other than the one little blip.”
The Peninsula Co-op Highlanders return home and will play their first match at Royal Athletic Park this Saturday at 4:30pm against TSS Academy. The women’s match will be followed by the men’s match versus the Washington Crossfire at 7:15pm. For more information, please visit www.victoriahighlandersfc.com
