June 3, 2013, Chilliwack, B.C (ISN) – The sun was shining for the opening round of the 2013 Flightscope/Cobra-PUMA GOLF PGA of BC Assistants’ Championship at Chilliwack Golf Club, but it shone brightest for first-round leader Gordy Scutt.
Scutt aced the ninth with a nine-iron en route to an opening round 68 which also included two birdies and just one bogey. “I always hit nine-iron on nine,” said Scutt of the shot that one-hopped its way into the cup.
As per tradition, Scutt had no problem pulling out his credit card and generously buying a round of drinks for his fellow competitors.
Scutt, playing out of the Olympic View Golf Club on Vancouver Island, leads a trio of golfers only one stroke behind.
Lindsay Bernakevitch, Greg Machtaler and James Harper all shot tidy rounds of 69.
Bernakevitch, playing out of the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club, blistered the course early, with five birdies in his first six holes to shoot an opening 33. He would finish with seven birdies for the day, with his only blemishes being three bogeys and a closing double bogey on the tough 18th at Chilliwack.
Machtaler’s round was much different. After opening with a bogey, the Summerland Golf and Country Club pro proceeded to birdie the second, fourth and seventh holes being parring the final 11 holes of his round.
Harper, playing out of the McCleery Golf Course in Vancouver, had four birdies and only two bogeys on his round, showing resilience as one of those bogeys came on his opening hole.
Another two strokes behind is Seymour Creek pro Bryn Parry, who shot an even-par 71 that included five birdies and five bogeys.
On the women’s side of the draw, Chilliwack Golf Club’s own Jennifer Greggain shot an 80 and holds a five-stroke lead over Shannon Briggs of GolfTEC North Vancouver and Ashley Zibrik of Shaughnessy, who each carded 85 on the challenging Chilliwack course.
In the seniors division presented by Kwikfit4u, Delta Golf Club’s Norm Jarvis shot a one-under 70 to lead by one over Two Eagles Golf Course & Academy’s Dean Claggett and Hillview Golf Course’s Keith Vandenbrink, who shot even-par 71.
Jarvis shot all pars on his front nine, but then exploded for birdies at 10, 11 and 14 before a double bogey at 15 slowed his momentum. But Jarvis had a bounce-back birdie at 16 before a closing bogey at 18 to close out his back-nine 33.
Claggett shot 35-36, which included an eagle on the par-five fifth.
Vandenbrink shot a 38-33 for his 71.
Tuesday’s final round starts bright and early at 7 a.m. The final tee time, featuring Scutt, Bernakevitch and Machtaler, is scheduled to play at 11:03 a.m.
Golf fans are encouraged to come out to the Chilliwack Golf Club to check out the action and cheer on their favourites.
