June 5, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – Several of the University of Victoria Vikes women’s soccer team members have a busy summer ahead as 12 current or former players are competing with the Victoria-based Peninsula Co-op Highlanders team.

Over the summer months the Highlanders women will compete in the Pacific Coast Soccer League (PCSL) and like the men’s Highlanders FC squad, which are well-represented with 10 Vikes, will gain regular training and competition leading up to the 2013 Canada West and CIS season.

The PCSL women’s division features 10 teams from across the lower mainland, Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island and BC interior including the Vancouver Whitecaps. The league is a competitive training ground that provides many elite collegiate and resident players a chance to play high-level soccer. The Highlanders women joined the PCSL in 2013 after competing in the W-League.

Coached by current Vikes women’s assistant coach Dave Dew, the Co-op women kicked off their season on May 12 with a 4-1 victory over the Kamloops Heat. CIS All-Canadian and team Canada member Jaclyn Sawicki, as well as veteran Jackie Harrison contributed a goal each for the opening, home win. The Highlanders are currently 2-1-2 and fourth in the satndings behind the Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Okanagan FC and Kamloops.

The Highlanders are highlighted by a number of players who were a part of the 2012 CIS bronze-medal win that took place this past November at Centennial Stadium. Sawicki and Harrison are joined by Mallory Hackett, Amy Lawrence, Samantha Lee, Sarah Douglas, Maryse Reichgeld, Nikki Turner, Sarah Lefebvre and Shannon Elder.

In addition, the squad features starters and former Vikes Mariel Solsberg and Liz Hansen. Both Solsberg and Hansen were a part of Victoria’s lone CIS championship winning team in 2005.

Most recently, the Highlanders defeated Abbotsford FC on the road 3-1, with Hansen and Harrison each notching their second of the season.

The Peninsula Co-op Highlanders will play their next match against the Okanagan’s TSS Academy on June 8 at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria.
