June 6, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – Spectrum Community School, Greater Victoria School District #61, now has a junior (grades 9 & 10) and a senior (grades 11 & 12) football team.

This is the first year the teams will be playing in the BC High School Football League. They are currently forty-five boys practicing in full gear three times per week.

Spectrum will join Victoria-based teams: Belmont, Mt. Doug and Edward Milne. The team will be in the Double “A” Division of BC Football. Home games will be played at RoyalAthletic Park, CityCentre Park in Langford and Spectrum School.

The team was assembled by Head Coach Roy Vollinger and Equipment Manager Gary Ralfs. With the $60,000 first year budget, funds were raised by player registrations and the Island’s business community including Quality Foods (coming to Victoria) and the Victoria Pub Company (Bard & Banker, Irish Times and Penny Farthing).

Head Coach Roy Vollinger has coached for thirty-one seasons with eight BC Championships, twenty-one Island Championships, eighteen scholarship players, two NFL players, and five CFL players. Roy received the Orange Helmet Award from the BC Lions in 2012. Roy will be assisted by eight coaches all having played Island football in the past.

The teams’ first games are June 7 at CityCentre Park against Belmont Secondary School. Their exhibition season starts September 4 against Mt. Doug Secondary, BC Champions. Regular season play starts on September 20. The offence will be led by quarterbacks Jake Jess & Tye Pettepiece. The defense will be led by linebackers Shaun Henry and Josh Kovacs.

With the commitment from the boys practicing three to four times per week, these students are demonstrating their dedication to the team and their school.

Any person wishing to support the team and donate to their new program will receive a tax receipt.

Any coaches or helpers who would like to volunteer can contact Roy at 250-361-5401(250-598-3235, after 6 pm) or email vollinger@shaw.ca.  Practices are usually at the school, Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 2 pm.
