June 8, 2013, Burnaby, BC (ISN) – The Simon Fraser University Men’s Ice Hockey team is pleased to announce that defenceman Jesse Williamson has committed to join the team for the 2013/14 season.
Williamson spent the past two seasons with the Nipawin Hawks of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. In 94 career games in the SJHL, Williamson compiled 34 points and 71 penalty minutes. The Saskatoon native also played one season in the Alberta Junior Hockey League with the Bonnyville Pontiacs.
SFU Head Coach Mark Coletta spoke about what was needed to make the team better following last season’s loss to Selkirk College in the BCIHL Finals. “We identified that bringing in defencemen was our number one priority and a player of Jesse’s caliber is a great addition to our team.”
Williamson describes himself as a “big strong defenceman with great vision and who is comfortable with the puck.” He also gives praise to the program at SFU saying he is excited to be a part of a team that is “very competitive and won’t settle for anything less than success.”
Coletta identifies Williamson as a big body presence who is a “great skater and also someone who moves the puck very well.”
Jesse has big ambitions with his new team as he wants to win a championship, something the previous team fell just short of in their sixth consecutive league finals. The SFU coaching staff say they expect Williamson to be a “physical force” and to give a major boost to the team’s core going into a season where every BCIHL team has improved significantly through offseason recruiting.
Williamson is the third player to commit to SFU for the 2013/14 season. Further announcements will be made in the coming weeks. For more information, please visit www.sfuhockey.com
