Three of four Canadian teams advance

June 7, 2013, Mysowice, Poland (ISN) – Three of the four Canadian teams at the FIVB U23 world championships beach volleyball tournament have advanced to the playoff knockout round.

In women’s play Friday, Taylor Pischke of Winnipeg and Melissa Humana-Paredes of Toronto completed the round robin undefeated upsetting third seeds Tara Roenicke and Kirby Burnham of the U.S., 21-14 21-15 for top spot in pool C

By placing first they get a bye to the second round of the playoffs.

In a must-win situation, Denise Wooding of North Vancouver and Charlotte Sider of Ottawa defeated Matilda Skagerberg and Anniken Radstrom Sweden 21-15, 21-9 for a 1-2 mark and third spot in pool E. Wooding and Sider advanced to the first round of the playoffs with the second and third place teams of each pool.

On the men’s side, William Hoey Brampton, Ont., and William Sidgwick of Toronto lost their last round robin match to finish third in their pool at 1-2. Greg Simone of London, Ont., and Gabriel Burlacu of Tecumseh, Ont., were winless in their international debut and did not advance.

Competition continues Saturday.
