Former national champion to represent Canada in diving

June 12, 2013, Ottawa (CIS) – Canadian Interuniversity Sport, in conjunction with Diving Plongeon Canada, announced Wednesday the Canadian diving team for the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia.

Cody Yano of Edmonton will be the lone Canadian diver at the 27th summer world university games. He is entered in both the one-metre and three-metre springboard events.

The 22-year-old will be accompanied in Kazan by team leader and two-time Olympian Reuben Ross of Regina.

Yano, who studies business at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), claimed the bronze medal in the 3m at the summer senior national championships held last month in Quebec City. He had won gold in the event at the winter nationals in Winnipeg, in February.

Yano has represented Canada on the international stage on numerous occasions over the years, including at last month’s Puerto Rico Grand Prix, where he finished fourth at 3m.

Canada returns to Universiade diving after a one-game hiatus as the country was not represented in the sport two years ago in Shenzhen, China. Canadian divers have captured 13 FISU medals over the years – including two gold – but have not reached the podium at the biennial games since 1999.

The Kazan diving competition is set from July 5 to 12. The men’s 3m and 1m finals are scheduled for July 7 and 8, respectively.
