June 11, 2013, Langley, BC (ISN) – The Trinity Western volleyball teams had better be ready to play from the season’s outset as the 2013-14 Canada West regular season schedule has the Spartans fall semester loaded with rivalry matches and highly-touted opponents.

The Spartans will open the season with a home-and-home series against UBC Oct. 25-26, which will mark the third time in four years the Lower Mainland rivals have met on opening weekend.

On the women’s side, it’ll be a rematch of both this past year’s Canada West gold medal match and CIS semifinal, both of which were won by the now six-time defending national champion Thunderbirds.

On the men’s side, it’ll be a rematch of last year’s Canada West semifinal that saw TWU rally from a two-set deficit to win in five and secure a spot in the national championship tournament.

Two weeks later, the Spartans will host Alberta in what will no doubt be another heated weekend between the long-time rivals.

On the men’s side, the Golden Bears and Spartans have combined to win seven of the last nine Canada West gold medals and six of the last 10 CIS Tantramar trophies. The two teams played in the fifth place match at last year’s CIS championship, with Alberta winning in four.

Meanwhile, the Pandas come to Langley as the defending CIS silver-medalists and a team the Spartans have long battled for position in the Canada West standings.

The Spartans wrap up a 12-match fall semester with an always tough road trip to Manitoba Nov. 29-30.

Trinity Western will open the second semester by hosting Mount Royal for the first time in the regular season Jan. 10-11. The Spartans will finish the season by hosting Winnipeg Feb. 7-8.

PLAYOFFS

Best-of-three quarter-finals get underway the week of February 14 and a few days later Canada West will have its Final Four in both men’s and women’s volleyball for the Feb. 21-22 weekend. Men’s schools will play for the coveted Costa Chrysanthou Trophy, while women attempt to secure the Women’s Intervarsity Volleyball Trophy.

With Canada West schools hosting both Nationals this season, final standings at the conference tournament are more important than ever, as only the University of Regina women and Calgary men are assured CIS spots.
