June 13, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The 2013 Times Colonist Charity Pledge Program (CPP) was officially launched today by the GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon, with the announcement that since 2006, the program has reached the $1 Million mark in fundraising.

Nineteen charities will be participating this year. The 2013 GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon will be held on Sunday, October 13th, 2013.

The charities raise awareness and funds by encouraging individuals to run or walk for their individual causes, and by collecting pledges. The 19 charities are the BC Cancer Foundation, Canadian Diabetes Association, Crohns and Colitis Foundation of Canada, HepCBC Hepatitis C Education & Prevention Society, KidSport Greater Victoria, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada, Lifetime Networks Victoria, Mary Manning Centre, Mount St. Mary Foundation, MS Society of Canada, NEED 2 Suicide Prevention and Support, Pacific Centre Family Services Association, Pacifica Housing, Recreation Integration Victoria, The Arthritis Society, Times Colonist Raise-a-Reader, USC Canada (Run for Biodiversity), Victoria Epilepsy and Parkinson’s, and Young Parents Support Network.

“We have had 50 unique charities over the seven years with some participating for one year and others, for all seven, and as a result this program has touched the lives of the young, the old and families across the country. The Victoria Marathon Society is proud to be able to provide the fundraising platform for the charities,” says Cathy Noel, General Manager, GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon. “It is a great milestone to be able to announce that we have reached the $1 Million mark. We would like to thank Encana, one of our sponsors, for making a donation that took us to that magic number.”

It is the second year that Calgary-based Encana Corporation has sponsored the Marathon. “One of the goals of our community investment program is to support the strength of mind and body through education, sport and recreation,” says Darci-Jane McAulay, Group Lead, Encana Corporation. “We feel that this donation will encourage not just a healthy lifestyle, but also promote spirit and a belief in the community, by enhancing donations for organizations that serve the community.”

For Lifetime Networks this will be their fourth year in the CPP. “We are pleased to be involved with the Times Colonist Charity Pledge Program,” says Wendy-Sue Andrew, Executive Director, Lifetime Networks. “It is one of our biggest fundraising events and provides us with opportunity to walk or run together and raise money for a great cause. It is truly a community event – there is something for everyone and all abilities. To date we have raised over $60,000 and our goal this year is to raise an additional $25,000. We encourage everyone to walk, run or pledge in the Charity Pledge Program – just get involved.”

Pacifica Housing is joining the CPP for the first time this year. “”We are absolutely thrilled to be part of the Charity Pledge Program this year. It’s a great opportunity for us, as a smaller non- profit, to gain exposure with both the running community and the community at large,” says Kristy Colpron, Manager of Fund Development. “Our goal is to raise $1,000 to support the programs and services we offer to families and individuals living in our affordable housing. Staff has rallied to get on board and we hope to have a minimum of 20 Pacifica Powerhousers seeking pledges”

For the third year, the CPP has a title sponsor, the Times Colonist. “The Times Colonist is honoured to do business in a community that is so philanthropic, and is once again pleased to support the 19 charities that will benefit from the Times Colonist Charity Pledge Program,” says Shannon Kowalko, Promotions and Community Relations Manager. “The GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon successfully created a unique and powerful fundraising opportunity for local organizations to not only raise funds but to also increase awareness. We are truly excited to be a part of this initiative.”
