June 12, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The Victoria Dragon Boat Festival Society launched its 19th year as Victoria’s premiere Asian cultural festival and a world class dragon boat racing event while supporting local business, the community, health and fitness in an early morning kick-off event at the Inn at Laurel Point.
In support of the Society’s mission, “Bringing Communities Together Through Dragon Boating”, Chair of the Board of Directors Mark Mawhinney announced the purchase of three locally-made Millenium Dragon Boats. Produced by Oceanus Plastics in Sidney, BC, these boats will be used at the 2013 Canada Dry Victoria Dragon Boat Festival, as well as by local teams training through the coming summer.
“We are very excited to support local business and the future of paddling in Victoria,” says Mawhinney. “Dragon boat paddling is such an accessible and inclusive sport. It provides people of any age or fitness level with the opportunity to excel in a great team sport and enjoy Victoria’s beautiful waterways. Our new boats will help the sport as it grows in Victoria, and help provide opportunities for new paddlers to get on the water.”
The three new locally-made boats also provide the opportunities for new corporate teams to train and compete in the 2013 Canada Dry Victoria Dragon Boat Festival. Corporate training packages are being offered through collaboration between the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival Society and the Gorge Rowing and Paddling Centre. A limited number of spaces are still available for new corporate teams. Programs begin during the week of June 24, 2013.
The 2013 Canada Dry Victoria Dragon Boat Festival takes place August 16-17-18 2013 at Ship Point in Victoria’s Inner Harbour. The Festival is a celebration of Asian sports and culture. Features include exciting dragon boat races, entertainment on two stages, activities for kids and families, world cuisines and more.
Fairway Market, another local business, is a long-standing supporter of the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival and of the Lights of Courage Campaign. The Dragon Boat Festival Society also supports a community fundraising program by supporting the BC Cancer Foundation. Lanterns will be available for sale at all Fairway Market locations starting July 15, 2013. Purchasers are encouraged to write a message of support for someone in their life affected by cancer and hang their lantern at the 2013 Canada Dry Victoria Dragon Boat Festival on August 16, 17 and 18, 2013.
The Victoria Dragon Boat Festival Society raises funds for the BC Cancer Foundation through a number of initiatives, including the Lights of Courage Campaign and the Paddlers’ Pledge Program. The BC Cancer Foundation is the bridge that connects philanthropic support and research breakthroughs in cancer knowledge. As the fundraising partner of the BC Cancer Agency and the largest charitable funder of cancer research in this province, the Foundation enables donors to make contributions to leading-edge research that has a direct impact on improvements to cancer care for patients on Vancouver Island and throughout our province.
