June 15, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – Some might say that a journey always has to begin with one step forward, and for a small army of children and youth football enthusiasts, some started their football championship experience this Saturday at Copley Field in Saanich, BC.

Football fans were treated to playoff action as the Greater Victoria Minor Football Association played day one matches of the 2013 Semi-Finals for the Gold Cup Playoffs for bragging rights to top spot.

In an early action match up in the Pre- Atom Division, the fourth place Naniamo Bombers (4-0-4) went head to head on the gridiron against the regular season leading Saanich Wolverines football club (7-0-1). The Bombers, with a strong defensive line, would prove a handful for the top shelf Wolverines, holding them to only 12 points in the game. Unfortunately for the Bombers, the Wolverines defense would be slightly better to the task at hand, holding the Bombers to a single touch down and a 12-6 win for the Saanich Wolverines. The Wolverines will wait for the outcome of Sundays other semi-final match where the Westshore Warriors will take on the Gordon Head Raiders, to find out who they will meet in the finals.

In the mid-day Atom Division test parents and fans alike watched the fourth place Saanich Wolverines take on the undefeated Gordon Head Raiders. Gordon Head, after apparently loosing last year in the finals, looked to redeem themselves this year and extend their season at least one more game. With nothing to loose, and everything to gain, Saanich looked to have confidence on their side, being able to stay close to Raiders in the first half only down 10-0. That balloon would seemingly be deflated, as the Raiders would strike quickly in the third for a fifteen-yard rushing touchdown by Raiders player#9. Raiders would add two more lightly contested touchdowns in the fourth quarter by Raiders teammates #17 and #9 to handily defeat the Wolverines 30-0 and move on to the finals.

The final game of the day, PeeWee teams from Naniamo and Saanich would meet in a game that was sure to be a hard-hitting contest. The Saanich Wolverines (7-0-1), with only one loss this season, were expected to come away with the win against the fourth place Naniamo Redmen (3-0-5). Unfortunately, results were not available at press time.
