Broder/Valjas edged for playoff spot

June 20, 2013, ROME (ISN) – Jamie Broder of Victoria and Kristina Valjas of Toronto won their final round robin match Thursday but were just edged out for a berth in the knockout round at the FIVB World Tour beach volleyball competition.

Broder and Valjas defeated Emilia Nystrom and Erika Nystrom of Finland 21-18, 21-19. The two teams were tied for third spot in Group G with a 1-2 record and also tied in sets won and loss but the Finns got the nod for the playoff berth with a better points for and against percentage.

Sarah Pavan of Kitchener, Ont., and Heather Bansley of Toronto lost their last round robin match to finish fourth in their pool.

On the men’s side, Ben Saxton of Calgary and Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta., fell to 0-2 losing to Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst of Austria 24-22, 19-21, 15-13. They are in a must win situation to advance on Friday.
