June 22, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – Three first inning runs proved to be all the Bend Elks would need, as they cruised to a 5-1 victory over the HarbourCats Friday night in Victoria.

The Elks got their first 4 runners aboard against starter Robby Nesovic, getting a 2-run double by Turner Gill and an RBI groundout by Curtis Wildung to take an early 3-0 lead.

With the run support, Elks’ starter Hunter Raley had plenty of support to work with. Raley blew through 4 innings, allowing just 1 hit before being lifted for reliever Eric Melobstad. The product out of ASU locked down the HarbourCats almost as well, giving up 4 hits over r 4 more innings. The HarbourCats scored once in the bottom of the 5th, and appeared to have a 2nd run, but home plate umpire Rob Allen ruled that the 3rd out was recorded before the 2nd run could cross.

“[Raley] had all 3 pitches working. [Melbostad] didn’t really keep us in check; we were just swinging at bad pitches,” said Greg Fettes.

Despite the early struggles, Nesovic logged 7 innings, giving up 11 hits (5 doubles) and 5 runs, taking his 1st loss of the season. Ultimately, the first inning proved most costly for the freshman out of UC-Santa Barbara.

“I just didn’t have it in the first inning. I made mistakes; they punished me for it,” said Nesovic.

The HarbourCats look to bounce back tomorrow at 7:05, as either Ty Provencher or Connor Russell will take the hill for Victoria on fireworks night at RAP.
