June 21, 2013, Kelowna, BC (ISN) – Three members of Greg Poitras’ Heat men’s volleyball squad have earned spots on the 21/20U Team BC Canada Summer Games Indoor squad.
Setter Kristof Schlagintweit (Abbotsford), middle Jim Bell (Surrey), and outside hitter Alex Swiatlowski (Victoria) will join the BC team this summer; all three will be sophomores this fall with the Heat.
The BC team comprised of the top 15 male athletes of 21U (athletes born in 1992 or later) age classes will train in Abbotsford at the Columbia Bible College and in Kelowna at the Kelowna Christian school in preparation for the Summer Games. The competition dates for men’s volleyball are August 1-9, 2013 in Sherbrooke, Québec.
“It’s quite an achievement for these three to make this team. Playing 21U, many of the athletes that will comprise their opponents will be going into their fourth year of CIS play,” says Heat coach Greg Poitras. “And training and competing against older players over the summer will be a great tool for their development.”
“Competing against such experienced players will enhance the special and rare experience the Canada Summer Games are for an athlete, and I’m glad three of the team have chosen to spend their summer on the team,” continues Poitras.
The team will train at Kelowna Christian and not the gymnasium on UBC’s Okanagan campus as the nearly 20 year old gym floor is being resurfaced. The new floor will reflect the Heat’s logos and school colors and incorporate the updated FIBA basketball lines.
19/18U TEAM BC
Two incoming Heat men’s volleyball players, Lars Bornemann and Chris Wilson, have been chosen to represent Team BC on the 19U team that will compete at the National Team Challenge Cup this July.
Lars, an outside hitter from Victoria was recently featured in the Province’s Head of the Class as one of the best and the brightest graduating student-athletes in BC. Chris Wilson, another top-ranked high schooler, is a middle blocker from Earl Marriot Secondary in Surrey.
The National Team Challenge Cup is an annual competition that in non-Canada Games years acts as the pinnacle of Team BC competition. Provincial teams from across Canada gather to compete. Volleyball Canada will continue their involvement with the Canadian National Team during the National Team Challenge Cup.
The team will be comprised of the top athletes 19U (born in 1994 or later) and will train July 1-15 in various locations in the Lower Mainland. The NTTC is set for July 12-21 in Gatineau, QC at the Centre sportif de Gatineau.
Josh Harvey from Cochrane, AB, who also just completed his freshman season for the Heat men’s volleyball team, will face the Heat recruits at the NTTC as he has been selected for 19U Team Alberta.
