Saxton/Chalk reach knockout round

June 21, 2013, ROME (ISN) – Ben Saxton of Calgary and Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta., won their final round robin match then lost in the knockout round on Friday to conclude the FIVB World Tour Grand Slam tournament in 17th place.

The result equaled Saxton and Schalk’s best result this season on the World Tour in five appearances. They were 17th last week in Poland.

In the morning, the first-year pair defeated Philip Gabathuler and Jonas Weingart of Switzerland 21-19, 20-22, 15-10 to grab third place in Pool F and advanced to the knockout round for the second and third place finishers from each of the eight groups.

In the evening, the Canadian pair lost to 15th seeds Alexey Sidorenko and Alexandr Dyachenko of Kazakhstan 21-13, 23-21. and
