Three Canadians into playoffs at U21 worlds

June 21, 2013, UMAG, Croatia (ISN) – Three of Canada’s four pairs at the U21 FIVB Word Beach Volleyball Championships advanced to the playoff round on Friday.

In men’s competition, 10th seeds, Grant O’Gorman of Toronto and Aaron Nusbaum of Aurora, Ont., hung on to third spot in Pool G despite two losses on Friday after winning their opening match. The pair were third here at the 2011 World Youth Championships.

In Group B, Greg Simone of London, Ont., and Gabriel Burlacu of Tecumseh, Ont., won their third and final round robin match to also advance. Simone and Burlacu went 0-3 last month at the U23 worlds and had lost their first two matches here.

On the women’s side, ninth-seeds Sophie Bukovec and Ali Wooley of Toronto ranked third in Pool H with a 2-1 mark defeating Ivana Ovcina and Tea Juric of Croatia 21-19, 21-14. In Group B, Tamara Vujadinovic and Emily Kuwaguchi, both of Toronto, lost their three matches and do not advance.
