June 23, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The Victoria Harbourcats continue to roll with another West Coast League 3 game series win thanks to a gutsy 3-2 victory over the Bend Elks on Sunday at Royal Athletic Park.

The Harbourcats gave Scott Kuzminsky the start on mound and he quickly fell into some trouble as the Elks loaded the bases but Kuzminsky settled down and got out of the inning unscathed.

The Elks would get on the board first on one of the strangest and luckiest plays of the season. Bend’s Keach Ballard hit a shot to right field for a double in the top of the 3rd, a pair of errors by right fielder Austin Russell and short stop Zach Storm resulted in Ballard taking 3rd and then trotting home for the 1-0 lead.

The ‘Cats answered back in the 4th when Chris Lewis hit sacrifice fly to centerfield that scored John Ellis from 3rd.

The Elks would again load the bases in the 5th but were only able to generate 1 run when a single by Tyler Servais allowed Chase Fields to cross the plate, putting the Elks up 2-1.

The 6th inning saw Victoria load the bases with 2 out when a timely single by local boy Austin Russell brought in Chase Lewis. David Schuknecht would then score on a wild pitch and the Harbourcats now lead 3-2.

Things got dicey for Bryan Conant, who came in to relieve Kuzminsky in the 6th, when the Elks once again loaded the bases in the 9th. The threat was short lived as a routine fly ball to center field preserved the win for the Harbourcats.

With the win the Harbourcats sit atop the North Division standings with a 10-4 record and are 1 game up on the Walla Walla Sweets, who are in action against the Medford Rouges this evening.

Victoria now heads to Washington State for 3 game sets against the Cowlitz Black Bears and Wenatchee Applesox before returning home on July 5 to take on the Kelowna Falcons.
