June 26, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – Victoria Highlanders FC (7-1-1) travel to Vancouver this Friday and take on the Whitecaps U-23’s (5-4-1) 7pm at UBC Thunderbird Stadium.
As the season begins to wind down in the Premier Development League, the significance of this game between two current playoff spot holders grows. This is the third game of the season between the provincial rivals with each taking one victory.
The winner of this match not only earns three important points in the PDL’s Northwest Division but also takes home the coveted supporter-created Juan de Fuca Plate. A draw would result in Vancouver taking home the plate due to goal differential, having outscored Victoria by two in May 31st’s 5-3 affair at Royal Athletic Park. Jordie Hughes scored two goals and Brett Levis added a goal and an assist. Niall Cousens added two goals of his own for the Whitecaps while Harpreet Lakhan tallied a goal and two assists.
Victoria’s defeat of Vancouver came on the road at UBC’s Thunderbird Stadium. Victoria won 3-2 with two goals from Jordie Hughes and another from Riley O’Neill. Tyler Hughes and Craig Gorman provided the assists.
With Victoria having a game in hand on the Whitecaps and leading them by six points in the standings, a win Friday would go far in securing their first playoff spot since 2011.
