Other marquee promotional nights that fill the 36 WHL home games at Rexall Place include the annual Dodge Teddy Bear Toss. This year’s holiday tradition will feature a matchup against what’s becoming another huge rival when the Oil Kings host the 2013 WHL Champion Portland Winterhawks Friday, December 6, 2013. The 5th Annual CN Hockey Hooky goes Tuesday, January 28, 2013 at 11:30 a.m. against the Brandon Wheat Kings. The Wheaties will also be the opponent for a contest on New Year’s Eve that will include post-game fireworks and extra activities to be unveiled at a later date. This will be the third straight season the team will host an afternoon game on Family Day which is turning into one of the higher attended games of the season. The largest crowd of the year is expected for Fan Appreciation Night to close out the regular season Sunday, March 14, 2014 against the Red Deer Rebels.
There will be a total of seven Family Fun Sundays over the course of the season. The recurring promotion was launched last season with tremendous success. The games built for family entertainment include a kids’ fun zone with inflatables, face painters, balloon artists and much more. There’s also $6 kids food combos and prizes to be handed out all season long. The Sunday games also feature a family-friendly 4:00 p.m. start times.
The home schedule also includes one game against every team in the WHL’s U.S. Division with Everett and Spokane coming in October, Portland in December and Seattle and Tri-Cities in January.
The Oil Kings will attempt to become the eighth team in WHL history to appear in three consecutive WHL Championship Series when the quest for the Ed Chynoweth Cup begins March 21, 2014.
