Team Canada Announced for SandJam Halifax

June 26, 2013, Halifax, (ISN) – The players for Team Canada at SandJam Halifax have been announced. Sarah Pavan, Heather Bansley, Sam Schachter and Josh Binstock will compete for the inaugural Canada Cup from August 15-18 on the Halifax waterfront.

Pavan and Bansley have recently teamed up on the sand since Pavan joined the Volleyball Canada beach program in May 2013. The pair placed 9th overall in their first FIVB beach volleyball event together at the Corrientes Grand Slam event in May. Pavan, from Toronto, ON, was the top indoor volleyball recruit in her high school graduating class in 2004. She went on to University of Nebraska where she was a four-time First Team All-American and led her team to an NCAA title in 2006. Since 2008, Pavan has been playing professionally in Italy and Canada.

Teammate Heather Bansley has been ranked a Senior National Athlete since 2008, while she attended University of Toronto and played for the Varsity Blues indoor volleyball team. Bansley has competed in multiple international events including the FIVB World Tour Grand Slam, the NORCECA Continental and an Olympic test event in 2011. She was named Canadian National Champion, along with former partner Liz Maloney, in 2010.

Holding down the men’s team positions are Josh Binstock and Sam Schachter, both from Richmond Hill, ON. Binstock competed in the London 2012 Olympics with partner Martin Reader, where the pair finished in 17th place overall after being defeated by Italy. A former Varsity Blues athlete at University of Toronto, Binstock was an All-Canadian first team all-star. He went to the London Olympics after winning the Olympic Trials in Ashbridges Bay, ON.

Schachter, the youngest member of Team Canada, has several titles under his belt. In September 2012 he won the Volleyball Canada Beach Nationals in Vancouver with partner Garrett May. The pair also captured the 2010 FIVB Beach Volleyball Junior World Championships in Turkey, the first Canadian team to win the title.

The Canada Cup begins in Round Robin play under the lights on Thursday, August 15th from 6:00-10:00p.m. Play continues on Friday from 6:00-10:00p.m. and Saturday from 12:00-4:00.m. Semi-finals take place Saturday evening from 6:00-10:00p.m. and finals are Sunday from 2:00-6:00p.m. Other teams competing are from U.S.A., Germany, and Great Britain.

SandJam Halifax is in its third year on the Halifax Waterfront, the 2,000-seat temporary outdoor stadium is on the Salter Lot at Lower Water St & Salter St. The past two years have hosted the FIVB Beach Volleyball Junior World Championships. This year’s event features evening games as well as the Legends Cup, a pro-tennis exhibition with former world #1 player Jim Courier on August 12.
