June 26, 2013, Portland, OR (ISN) – The Portland Winterhawks will raise their WHL Championship banner on Friday, September 20 when they host the Prince George Cougars in the Rose Garden to open the 2013-14 season.

Opening night will feature a celebration of the historic 2012-13 season, as the Hawks will raise banners for their U.S. Division championship, the Scotty Munro Trophy, the Western Conference championship and the franchise’s third WHL title.

It will be the first game of the Hawks’ title defense in 2013-14, and fans can see the entire slate of games as the Western Hockey League has released the regular season schedule. The Winterhawks will play 23 of 36 home games on weekends, along with a 3:30 p.m. afternoon matinee on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, on Monday, January 20. All 72 games will be broadcast on KPAM AM 860 and winterhawks.com. A complete schedule is attached to the e-mail.

The popular Teddy Bear Toss will take place on Dec. 14 when the Hawks host the Seattle Thunderbirds. In addition, the team will again host Portland’s biggest New Year’s Eve party, with a Dec. 31 game at the Rose Garden against the Kelowna Rockets at 8 p.m. Fans can stay to skate on the ice with players after the game. A full promotional calendar will be released closer to the season.

Among the highlights of the 2013-14 schedule:

· Four of the team’s first five games are at home

· The first home game against the rival Seattle Thunderbirds will be Saturday, Sept. 28 in the Rose Garden

· The first home rematch of last year’s Western Conference Final against the Kamloops Blazers will be Saturday, Oct. 12 in the Rose Garden

· The latter trip will include a rematch of the last two WHL Championship Series when the Hawks travel to Edmonton on Dec. 6

· The Hawks will host a Veterans’ Day celebration on Sunday, November 10 when they host the Regina Pats
