June 27, 2013, Richmond, BC (ISN) – Seymour Creek’s Bryn Parry had an epic comeback Thursday afternoon against Quebec’s Marc Girouard in the quarterfinals of the PGA Championship of Canada Match Play at the Magna Golf Course in Aurora, Ont.
Parry was down four after eight holes, but stormed back to win 2-up, including wins on the last two holes against Girouard.
Parry, the only player in the final eight not from Quebec or Ontario, fell behind early with losses on the first, third and fifth holes to his veteran Quebec opponent.
Parry’s day looked even bleaker after Girouard made back-to-back birdies at 7 and 8 to go up four on the North Vancouver native.
But Parry then won the next four holes, including two clutch birdies, before Girouard made a birdie at 13 to get himself back in the lead.
After halving the 14th, both players had wedge in on the driveable 15th and Parry almost dunked his for eagle before settling for a kick-in birdie. Girouard was unable to match and the two headed to 16 with the match in doubt.
At 16, Parry had a birdie putt to take his first lead of the day, but the putt wouldn’t fall, leaving Girouard with a four-footer which he calmly knocked in.
Parry would take his first lead of the match at 17, almost making an ace on the par-three, before closing Girouard out on the 18th hole with another win.
The plucky Girouard told PGA of Canada officials during Parry’s comeback: “I’m old, I’m tired and this guy is good but I’ll keep grinding.”
Parry only had to play a total of 40 holes in his first three matches, having not seen the 15th to 18th holes since playing them with TaylorMade executives prior to the Match Play beginning on Tuesday.
Parry’s day began with a 7&5 whipping of Quebec’s Vincent Dumouchel. Parry made nine birdies in 13 holes en route to his second straight match ending on the 13th green.
Parry now faces No. 1 seed Brian McCann of Ontario, who won his quarterfinal over Dan Greenwood 2&1. In the other semi-final, Quebec’s Louis-Pierre Godin faces Ontario’s Billy Walsh.
The 2013 PGA Championship of Canada concludes on Friday with the semifinals in the morning and the final in the afternoon at the Magna Golf Course in Aurora, Ont.
