June 29, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – Victoria Highlanders FC headed to UBC Thunderbird Stadium Friday night, facing off against Whitecaps U-23 in the final meeting of the season between the clubs.

The game started off with two great chances by the Whitecaps. A shot that sailed over the crossbar just one minute in while the second shot appeared to be heading in before goalkeeper Elliot Mitrou lept up and got a left hand on the ball, pushing it over top of the crossbar.

The Highlanders first chance came at the six-minute mark, when Brett Levis dribbled into the box and fired it over the bar.

At the ten-minute mark Levis broke in once again finding room in the box and dribbling around the Whitecaps defender. Levis would fire a ball to the front of the net but it was unable to find a Highlander to convert it.

The Whitecaps drew first blookd at 23 minutes, when Sasa Plavisic fired a ball from outside the box past goalkeeper Mitrou to put the Whitecaps up 1-0.

At 29′ minutes, Gavin Barrett looked to tie the match with a shot from 30 yards out, it would go high however.

Levis had another opportunity at 33 minutes, when Riley O’Neill fed him a ball inside the 18-yard box that Levis blasted just high over the crossbar.

At 40 minutes, captain Tyler Hughes made a perfect feed to Levis who broke in through the defense up the middle before firing it past Whitecaps goalkeeper Marco Carducci to even the game up, 40-mintues in.

The second half opened up with a slower pace. With neither side generating any large scoring chances early.

At 65′ Leviis fed O’Neill who passed it to Jordie Hughes. Hughes unleashed a blast that ‘keeper Carducci got in front of, making one of his largest saves of the game.

Niall Cousens night ended early received his second yellow card at 73-minutes after running into goalkeeper Mitrou.

At 87-minutes a sure goal by Jordie Hughes was stopped by ‘keeper Carducci, who then sprung to his left to stop a Sturrock blast and keep the tie intact. The game finished in 1-1 draw, earning Whitecaps U-23 the Juan de Fuca plate.
