WHL Players Selected In First Round Of 2013 NHL Draft

June 30, 2013, Newark, NJ (ISN) – Eight players from the Western Hockey League heard their named called in the first round of the 2013 NHL Draft on Sunday, June 30th, at the Prudential Centre in Newark, New Jersey.

 

Seth Jones of the Portland Winterhawks was the first WHL player selected, chosen 4th overall by the Nashville Predators, and was the first of five WHL defencemen to be chosen among the top 30 picks in the draft.

A product of Plano, Texas, Jones became the third member of the Winterhawks over the last four years to be selected among the top 5 picks in the NHL draft, and the sixth Winterhawks player to be chosen in the first round over the last four years.

Other WHL defencemen to be chosen in the first round of the 2013 NHL Draft include Josh Morrissey of the Prince Albert Raiders (13th overall, Winnipeg Jets), Ryan Pulock of the Brandon Wheat Kings (15th overall, New York Islanders), Mirco Mueller of the Everett Silvertips (18th overall, San Jose Sharks) and Shea Theodore of the Seattle Thunderbirds (2th overall, Anaheim Ducks).

Edmonton Oil Kings center Curtis Lazar was the first WHL forward selected in the 2013 NHL Draft, chosen 17th overall by the Ottawa Senators. Medicine Hat’s Hunter Shinkaruk was selected 24th overall by the Vancouver Canucks and Regina Pats’ forward Morgan Klimchuk was chosen 28th overall by his hometown Calgary Flames.

The eight players selected in the first round of the 2013 NHL Draft marks the most WHL players chosen in the opening round of an NHL Draft since 2009 when nine players were chosen. Six WHL players were selected in the first round of the 2012 NHL Draft.
