July 2, 2013, STARE JABLONKI, Poland (ISN) – Sarah Pavan of Kitchener, Ont., and Heather Bansley of Toronto have a win and a loss after their first two round robin matches at the FIVB World Championships in beach volleyball.
Pavan and Bansley, competing at their first world championships together and only their fourth international tournament, upset seventh-seeds Evegenia Ukolova and Ekaterina Khomyakova of Russia 18-21, 21-14, 15-10.
In their second match on Tuesday, they lost to Doris Schwaiger and Stefanie Schwaiger of Austria 13-21, 21-15, 15-13. The Schwaigers lead the Group G standings at 2-0 followed by the Canadians and Russians both at 1-1. The top two in of the 12 pools and the eight-best third place finishers advance to the knockout round.
Jamie Broder of Victoria and Kristina Valjas of Toronto are 0-2.
On the men’s side, Ben Saxton of Calgary and Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta., lost their opening match 10-21, 21-18, 15-13 to Nicolai Paolo and Daniele Lupo of Italy.
Round robin competition continues Wednesday.
