July 4, 2013, Edmonton, AB (ISN) – The Edmonton Oil Kings added a power forward to the mix Wednesday with the selection of Mads Eller in the 2013 CHL Import Draft. The Oil Kings used the 57th pick to acquire the rights to the younger brother of Danish forward Lars Eller who plays for the Montreal Canadiens.
“It was a great feeling and a relief to be able to draft Mads,” said Oil Kings General Manager Bob Green. “He was a player we identified heading into the selection process and we were fortunate enough to have him available at that point in the draft. He’s a big kid that has some World Junior experience with Team Denmark and we see him as a great fit.”
Mads was born on June 25, 1995 and is listed as a left winger. The 6 foot, 187 pound forward played the past two seasons for Frolunda in the Swedish Junior U-18 League where he registered 19 goals, 20 assists for 39 points in 58 games over the last 2 seasons. He also racked up 79 penalty minutes this past season.
Mads’ older brother Lars became the highest ever drafted Danish born hockey player when he was chosen in the first round, 13th overall by the St. Louis Blues back in 2007. There have been higher Danish selections since but Lars would definitely be considered a trail blazer. Mads’ father, Olaf is a former player and coach back in his home country and has been a colour commentator for Danish TV that included coverage of the IIHF World Hockey Championship.
