Saxton and Schalk reach playoffs at beach volleyball worlds

July 4, 2013, Stare Jablonki, Poland (ISN) – Ben Saxton of Calgary and Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta., advanced to the knockout round on Thursday at the FIVB World Championships in beach volleyball.

Saxton and Schalk lost their third and final round robin match 8-21, 22-20 15-12 to finish second in Pool J with a win and two losses. The top-two from each of the 12 pools and the eight best third place teams advance.

They will face 38th seeds Piotr Kantor and Bartosz Losiak of Poland who went undefeated in round robin play on their home sand.

In women’s competition, Sarah Pavan of Kitchener, Ont., and Heather Bansley of Toronto lost their round of 32 match losing to Barbara Hansel and Katharina Schutzenhofer of Austria 13-21, 21-19, 15-7.
