FISU starts Sunday in Kazan, Russia

July 5, 2013, Kazan, Russia (ISN) – Athletics competition at the 2013 edition of Summer Universiade (FISU) begins Sunday July 7 in Kazan, Russia.

Day one of athletics competition will see 20 Canadian athletes in action including 2012 Olympians Julie Labonté of Sainte-Justine, Que., in the women’s shot put, Jessica Smith of North Vancouver, B.C., in the women’s 800-metres and Sarah Wells of Unionville, Ont., in the women’s 400-metre hurdles.

Also in action on day one are five members of the 2013 World Championship team; Sam Effah from Calgary, Alta., in the men’s 100-metres, Labonté, Noelle Montcalm of Windsor, Ont., in the women’s 400-metre hurdles, Tim Nedow of Brockville, Ont., in the men’s shot put, and Christabel Nettey of Surrey, B.C., in the women’s long jump. These athletes will return to Russia (Moscow) August 10 to 18 for the 2013 IAAF World Championships.
