July 7, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – Peninsula Co-op Highlanders (9-1-2) hosted Coquitlam Metro-Ford SC (2-11-1), defeating them 7-0 and climbing closer to Vancouver Whitecaps FC, who hold first place in the Pacific Coast Soccer League’s Premier Women’s Division. They are now just seven points behind Vancouver and have two games in hand.

Liz Hansen came out firing, scoring in the fourth and fifth minutes on assists by Katie Kraeutner and Mariel Solsberg. Hansen finished the natural hat trick in the 12th minute after being set up by Elise Wyatt. Wyatt stepped up after a tackle from behind forced Hansen to leave the game in the 25th minute. Wyatt scored twice in the 39th and 44th minutes, both times off passes from Solsberg. Solsberg earned her third assist of the game from the right full back position. The next goal for the Highlanders came in the 60th when Aby Raymer blasted a shot that went off the post and in from 18 yards out after squaring up to a pass from Wyatt. Mallory Hacket was able to put one of her own away, twenty minutes later, in the 80th minute after Shannon Elder launched a corner kick into the box.

This was keeper Olivia de Goede’s first start of the year and she was able to post a shut-out at a time when points are important for the Highlanders as the chase the number one spot in the league.

“It was a great overall team performance in which all players contributed,” said Head Coach Dave Dew.

Dew has to be pleased with the team’s performances as of late. The Highlanders have won eight straight and have outscored opponents 39-6 in that span. They play NSGSC Eagles today in Vancouver. Their next home game is at the Highlanders double header on July 13th when they host Okanagan FC prior to the Men’s First Team hosting Portland Timbers U-23’s.
