July 9, 2013, Kelowna, BC (ISN) – With graduation just finishing and training camp just weeks away two new additions to the UBC Okanagan Heat soccer teams have been selected as recipients of the inaugural 2013 EA Sports BC Soccer Premier League Scholarship.

Michael Sexton from Thompson Okanagan FC and Katie Smillie from Coastal FC will be joining the men’s and women’s Heat soccer programs respectively and have each won the award.

In 2013, 16 scholarships of $1000 each were made available to eight male and eight female students, which will be proceeding on to a university or post-secondary institution in BC, have a 3.0 GPA, and play for a BCSPL franchise or their regional partner club.

Michael Sexton is an incoming keeper who played for the City of Kelowna’s 2012 Bryan Couling Athletic Team of the Year, the Okanagan Mission Secondary Senior Boys Soccer Team, and has high academic hopes with a desire to take his schooling all the way to a Law degree.

Katie Smillie, a fullback from Delta, will leave her Coastal FC club team and jump right into the Nursing program at UBC’s Okanagan campus straight from Delta Secondary.

Katie, and the other recruits for the women’s soccer team, will join head coach Claire Paterson and a strong returning cast, in training camp on August 17, with their first exhibition matches slated for the next weekend in Alberta, Aug 23-24.

Michael will have his first taste of Heat soccer in early August as men’s coach Dante Zanatta, who will begin his third season with the Heat this fall, will begin training with a walk-on camp August 6-7 with full camp for all players to follow.

Both teams will start their final PACWEST regular season at home on the Nonis Sports Field when they host the Vancouver Island Mariners on Saturday Sep 7 at 1 p.m. and at 3 p.m., women’s and men’s respective start times.
