Three provinces have travelled to KZN to participate in this tournament namely, Gauteng Township Schools, East London Township Schools (Border) and Western Province Township schools which symbolizes the growth of the tournament.

Shane Gaffney, Director of Sport at Hilton College said,” It is an honour and a privilege to welcome and host the 6th Sunfoil Township Tournament. Hilton College is delighted to be part of this tournament, which brings together some of the top cricketers from the township schools in and around South Africa. We are hoping that this tournament stays at Hilton in years to come.”

This cricket week will be a T20 format. All juniors will play in the morning and seniors in the afternoon. At the end of the tournament, the Sunfoil XI Invitation team will be selected and play against the Suncoast Dolphins Academy on Thursday the 11th.

The programme, which has drawn considerable praise from Cricket South Africa, and has been used as a template for other cricket franchises, has grown from strength to strength.

Six years ago, family owned Willowton Group, one of South Africa’s largest sunflower seed crushers and leading manufacturer of edible oils and margarines, partnered with the KwaZulu Natal Cricket Union to develop the Sunfoil Township Cricket tournament.

The objective was to develop a cricket culture within townships and to encourage children from disadvantaged communities to become involved in a team sport.

Together with support from Cricket South Africa, the EThekwini Municipality, the KZN Department of Sports and Recreation and key sponsors like Willowton Group, the KZN Cricket Union developed a plan and infrastructure to support this township development programme.

“By exposing our township teams to the game of cricket, we are helping to shape tomorrow. Our vision is to enhance the level of skills, knowledge and the experience. We would like to thank Sunfoil for the pivotal role that they are playing in bringing cricket to the townships. Their hands on approach and passion to make a difference, has helped us to build structures that will leave a legacy for years to come. Our appreciation also goes to the Hilton College for hosting us”, commented Jesse Chellan, CEO at KwaZulu Natal Cricket Union.

The Willowton Group hopes to unite the children through the game of cricket and show them that they can rise above any circumstance with the right attitude. Perseverance and hard work makes any dream achievable and this tournament teaches them just that. Empowering children through sport is just one of the ways Willowton Group hopes to uplift the community.
