Jeremy Rae wins Silver; Race Walk Team claims bronze on Day 3 at FISU

July 9, 2013 (ISN) – It was a silver medal for Jeremy Rae of Fort Erie, Ont., over 1500-metres today at the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia. Rae climbed his way to the second place finish registering a time of 3:39.45. Ross Proudfoot of Lively, Ont., finished ninth in 3:44.33.

Earlier this morning the men’s 20km race walk team won the bronze medal; the first Canadian medal at FISU. Inaki Gomez of Vancouver B.C., was Canada’s top finisher with a fifth place performance and time of 1:22:29. Benjamin Thorne of Kitimat, B.C., finished 16th in 1:26:59 and Evan Dunfee of Richmond, B.C., place 21st in 1:31:07.

Inaki Gomez comments on the race; “It’s an honour to win Canada’s first medal in Kazan. The team event is neat because it adds a whole other dynamic to the competition.” Gomez adds; “This was a very strong field, lots of Olympians, including Krivov and Dmytrenko and I was four minutes faster today than in Shenzhen” (The last edition of FISU).

In the women’s 400-metres Alicia Brown of Ottawa, Ont., finished fifth in a personal best of 52.08 seconds registering a World Championships B standard and punching her ticket to the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Championships later this summer.

In the men’s decathlon Patrick Arbour of Ottawa, Ont., finished eighth overall with 7240 points. The second day of competition saw him clock 15.29 over the 110-metre hurdles, win the discus with 47.64 metres, clear 4.20 metres in the pole vault, throw 63.34 metres in the javelin and finish in 5:08.00 over 1500-metres.

  • Unionville, Ont.’s Sarah Wells finished the 400-metre hurdles final in fourth place running 55.76 seconds
  • Daniel Harper of Brampton, Ont., finished eighth in the men’s 400-metres final crossing the line in 46.97 seconds
  • Vancouver duo Jessica Smith (2:00.43) and Helen Crofts (2:03.30) finished six-seven respectively in the women’s 800-metres final.
  • In the men’s 200-metres Segun Makinde of Ottawa, Ont., and Brendon Rodney of Toronto, Ont., qualified into the 200-metres semis. They both won their opening heats in 20.84 and 20.06 respectively. In the round two heats they both came out in second for the automatic qualification; they registered 20.79 and 20.84 respectively
  • Regina, Sask.’s Tait Nystuen finished his semi final 400-metre hurdles heat in sixth with 50.90 and does not advance
  • Shai-Anne Davis of Richmond, Ont., and Kim Hyacinthe of Terrebonne, Que., won their 200-metres heats and qualify into the semi finals with 23.74 and 23.62 seconds respectively
