Canada eliminated from medal contention

July 11, 2013, KAZAN, Russia (Team Canada) (ISN) – The Canadian men’s water polo team was eliminated from medal contention Thursday afternoon with lopsided 20-3 loss to Australia.

Canada finishes fifth in Pool A with a 1-4 record and will resume play in Kazan on the consolation side of the draw, starting on Saturday. Australia (2-3) claimed the fourth and final ticket for the quarter-finals out of the group.

Down 4-0 after the opening quarter, the Canadians trailed 9-3 at halftime and were outscored 11-0 after the break.

Devon Thumwood of Calgary (Mount Royal University), with a pair, and Nikola Mitrovic of Gatineau, Que., with a single, scored in the second period in the losing cause. Thumwood led his side through the preliminary round with seven goals.

Fraser Smith, Christopher Dyson, Justin Trabinger and Blake Edwards each scored a hat trick for the winners.

Milan Radenovic of Calgary (University of Calgary) started in net for Canada and made eight saves. At the other end of the pool, Edward Slade turned away five balls.

In its last appearance in the FISU Games men’s water polo tournament, in 2009, Canada finished in 13th position.
