July 11, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The University of Victoria will play host to Canada’s largest international youth rugby sevens event this weekend as teams from rival provinces, the United States and England assemble for the Victoria International Youth Sevens.

The tournament will feature the pulsating, high tempo seven-a-side version of rugby as teams get set to contest titles in the U18, U16 and U14 boys and U18 girls divisions.

The Victoria event is one of three major stops for the BC Elite Youth Sevens, run by former national team player and coach Shane Thompson. The high performance program is geared towards producing athletes for future World Cups and Olympic Games (Rugby Sevens to debut in 2016). This past year has seen the U18 men’s program defend their title at the Hong Kong International Youth Sevens and finish as runner-ups to the USA All-Americans in Las Vegas. Another major highlight for the BCEY7s program was graduate Justin Douglas of Abbotsford debuting for the senior men’s national team on the International Rugby Board’s Sevens World Series.

The Victoria tournament has expanded from six to ten teams in the U18 men’s division and will feature three squads from Thompson’s BCEY7s program.

Last year’s runner-ups Ontario have had a successful year capturing the New York Sevens Invitational and in February advanced to the semifinals in Vegas. Ontario last won the Victoria Sevens in 2011.

The Utah Cannibals and Washington Loggers will also feature in this year’s competition along with two sides from the Southern California All-Stars as well as a pair of entries from touring English side Sherborne School.

The U18 men’s competition gets underway at UVic’s Wallace Field on 10:00am on Friday, July 12th with the last match set for 4:45pm. The opening fixture will see Southern Cal-1 face off against Sherborne 2. The first fixture for BC sides will see BC-White take on BC-Gold at 10:20am. Day one will feature round-robin fixtures with the playoff rounds set for July 13th.
