July 11, 2013, Burnaby, BC (ISN) – The Simon Fraser University Men’s Ice Hockey team is pleased to announce that former Johnstown Tomahawk Mike Sandor has committed to join the team for the 2013/14 season.
Sandor is from North Vancouver, and after strong Junior seasons with the Penticton Lakers (KIJHL) and Victoria Grizzlies (BCHL), the two-way forward headed east to Pennsylvania to play for Johnstown Tomahawks in the North American Hockey League (NAHL). After one season in the NAHL, Sandor is returning home to begin his college career with Simon Fraser University.
Mike could be considered a natural fit with SFU, considering the fact that his older brother Nick just put up 31 points in 24 games with SFU, good enough for sixth in BCIHL scoring last season. But the younger Sandor brings a different game, one that Head Coach Mark Coletta stresses will be just as important for the upcoming season.
“We think Mike will fit in very well with our group,” says Coletta. “He plays on both sides of the puck and is a very well-rounded player. Having brothers on a team can be a challenge, but we have experienced this in the past with the Moscone brothers. We expect to see nothing but great things from the Sandor boys this season.”
“I am excited to come to SFU this fall because not only is it a very good academic school but they have a great hockey program as well,” says Sandor, who describes himself as a “playmaker that’s offensive minded and can also play a two-way game.” As for the family connection, “I’m also excited to play alongside my brother for the first time.”
Sandor is the seventh player to commit to SFU for the 2013/14 season. Further announcements will be made in the coming weeks. For more information or to stay up to date on the latest recruits, please visit
