Double Silver medals for the 4x400m relay teams on the final day of FISU

July 12, 2013 (ISN) – Both the men’s and women’s 4×400-metre relay teams finished second in their respective finals securing two more silver medals at FISU on the final day of athletics competition in Kazan, Russia.

The women’s team of Noelle Montcalm of Windsor, Ont., Sarah Wells of Unionville, Ont., Helen Crofts of West Vancouver, B.C., and Alicia Brown of Ottawa, Ont., ran 3:32.93 for the podium finish. The men’s race of Benjamin Ayesu-Attah of Coquitlam, B.C., Brendon Rodney of Toronto, Ont., Michael Robertson of Williamstown, Ont., and Daniel Harper of Brampton, Ont., reached the podium in 3:05.26.

The men’s 4×100-metre relay of Michael Robertson, Segun Makinde of Ottawa, Ont., Brendon Rodney and Sam Effah of Calgary, Alta., finished fifth in the final crossing the line in 39.39 seconds.

In the men’s long jump, London, Ont.’s Taylor Stewart finished sixth measuring 7.80 metres.

Lucas Bruchet of White Rock, B.C., and Andrew Nixon of Guelph, Ont., placed ninth and 12th respectively in the 5000-metres final. Bruchet clocked in at 14:08.59 and Nixon at 14:32.83.

Five Medals for Canada  

The 2013 Summer Universiade (FISU) saw Canada with five medals including its’ first ever gold medal performance in athletics by an individual Canadian female at this competition.

  • GOLD was won by Kimberly Hyacinthe of Terrebonne, Que., in the women’s 200-metres. Kim is the first individual Canadian female gold medalist in athletics at FISU. She is also the only Canadian (male or female) to have won two gold medals at FISU; in 2009 she won the team gold in the 4×400-metre relay
  • SILVER was won in the 1500-metres by Fort Erie, Ont.’s Jeremy Rae
  • SILVER for the women’s 4x400m relay team  
  • SILVER for the men’s 4x400m relay team
  • BRONZE was taken by the men’s racewalk team of Inaki Gomez of Vancouver, B.C., Benjamin Thorne of Kitimat, B.C., and Evan Dunfee of Richmond, B.C.
