In the morning quarter-final match with China, Canada’s women’s squad jumped out to a 19-0 first half lead with tries by Natasha Watcham-Roy of Gatineau, Que. (University of Ottawa), Karla Telidetzki of Edmonton (Toronto) and Chelsea Guthrie, also of Edmonton (Alberta).

China got on the board in the final minute of the first half but the Canadian defence clamped down and shut out their opponents in the final seven minutes. Guthrie scored her second try of the match and team captain Jean Baker of Argyle Shore, P.E.I., (Saint Mary’s) also scored in the second half.

The Canadians then had the difficult task of toppling Russia in the afternoon semifinal. The red and white stuck with the Russians in the first half and trailed just 12-5 at the midway point. But the powerhouse host-Russians shut out the Canadians 19-0 in the second frame for the 31-5 win.

The Canadian men (3-2) scored a 19-0 win over Latvia (2-3) in the consolation semi-final. It was the team’s first shutout of the Games, and their third straight win.

Andrew Battaglia of Richmond Hill, Ont., (UC Berkley) scored three tries and Byron Boville of Barrie, Ont., (Guelph) was perfect on his two convert attempts. Battaglia struck just 1:36 into the game to put the Canucks in charge of the match.
