July 18, 2013, Ottawa, ON (ISN) – The National Team Challenge Cup volleyball tournament for men and women is underway and runs until Sunday – in Gatineau, Que. (men) and in Winnipeg (women).
The National Team Challenge Cup is an annual inter-provincial championship featuring the top 18U athletes (women – born in 1995 or later) and 19U athletes (men – born in 1994 or later) from each province. “The National Team Challenge Cup is designed to build a bridge between our National Teams and the short-term objectives of Volleyball Canada’s Regions,” explains James Sneddon, Volleyball Canada’s Domestic Development Director. “In a Canada Games year, (coming up in Sherbrooke, QC) the NTCC tournaments provide a training and competitive opportunity for those athletes just below the Games age eligibility. The intent of hosting each event at the National Team Centres is to complement the tournament play with training opportunities with our National Team coaches as well as professional development opportunities for all coaches involved.”
Seven teams including the National Junior Training squad are competing in Winnipeg at the National Team Training Centre at the U of Manitoba and six teams are competing at the Men’s National Team Centre at the Centre Sportif in Gatineau. Canada Elite (junior) squad is training at the Winnipeg centre tomorrow (Thursday) from 12 noon to 1:30pm.
