July 17, 2013, Sidney, Saanich Penninsula (ISN) – Tennis BC and South Island Tennis Association (SITA) announce the winner of Canada’s Rogers cup giveaway. “We’re thrilled to be able to offer BC residents, specifically, South Island residents, the chance to participate in a world-class tennis tournament”, said Sarah Dunbar, Director, Tennis BC.

The top 20 players in the WTA will play in the Roger’s Cup this year. The Sidney Saanich Peninsula Resident and tennis fan, Penny Woodward, won the opportunity. “I’m so incredibly excited, I can’t believe I won, it’s a chance of a lifetime”, said Woodward. The fundraiser includes return airfare to Toronto for two, three nights stay at The Fairmont Royal York and silver seat tickets, donated by Tennis Canada, to the women’s semis and final matches. Don Fennerty, General Manager of The Fairmont Empress said, “Fairmont Hotels and Resorts support a variety of local events; in this case, we are pleased to raise awareness for tennis in the South Island area”.

“That’s what we do,” said Al Title, SITA President. “We promote tennis to people of all ages as a lifetime sport. We put this package together, with our partners, to shine some light on the sport and at the same time fundraise for SITA and our junior tennis programs. It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved.”

Tennis world No. 3 Victoria Azarenka and recent Wimbledon champion and world No. 7 Marion Bartoli have been added to the Roger’s Cup player list. Some of the greatest players in tennis history have been crowned champion at Canada’s Rogers Cup including Steffi Graf, Justine Henin, Martina Hingis, Martina Navratilova, and Monica Seles. The tournament August 3-11, 2013 at the Rexall Centre on York University campus in Toronto will feature the women’s tournament. Men’s tournament takes place in Montreal.

“We drew the winning ticket at our annual AGM and South Island Tennis League (SITL) finale this week,” said Bob Turner, SITA Board Member. “It sure was exciting, especially because the winner was present,” added Bob. The SITA Tennis League continues to grow in popularity with 250 players this year. SITA is proud of its league participation and encourage all South Island residents to engage in the many tournaments offered throughout the year by staying in the know at …/2SITA is the proud creator of Community Tennis Day widely attended by South Island residents to engage everyone, of all ages, in the sport of tennis. Additionally, the community has adopted SITA’s Used Racquet Program with open arms. A record number of racquets were turned in this summer and donated to those without.
