July 25, 2013, Linz-Ottensheim, Austria (ISN) – The 2013 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Linz-Ottensheim, Austria, continued today with Canada’s crews getting the chance to test their speed against the best in this age category.

Last year’s U23 World bronze medalist Carling Zeeman of Cambridge, ON, won her heat today in 7:52.51 to easily advance to the semi-final of the women’s single sculls event. Filippa Kaarrfelt of Sweden qualified with Zeeman from this heat.

The Canadian men’s coxed four had a gutsy rep today to finish second in 6:16.81 and progress to the final. Germany won in 6:15.73, and Great Britain (6:16.97) was forced to the B final.

This crew is Robert Gage of Hamilton, ON, Alexander Janzen of Langley BC, William O’Connell of Victoria BC, Trofym Anderson of Welland, ON, and coxswain Jacob Koudys of Fonthill, ON.

“I think it went really well,” said Gage. “We realized that we needed more than in the heat. We were all just really motivated to get where we wanted to be. We managed to get the Brits in the last five (500m). It was a dog fight to the end and we wanted it more.”

Lightweight women’s single, Erin Snelgrove of Jordan, ON, finished fourth in 8:01.26 in her heat and now goes to a repechage.

After a disappointing heat yesterday, lightweight single Matthew Christie of Kingston, ON, today was first in a rep in 7:11.73, and progresses to a quarter-final.

The Canadian U23 men’s double was also fourth in heat in 6:33.94 and go to a rep. This combination is Pascal Lussier of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and Paul Thiessen of Mitchell, MB.

The women’s eight was third in a heat in time of 6:29.05, the U.S. won in 6:15.79; Great Britain won the other heat in 6:21.46. Canada will race in the reps for a spot in the final.

This crew is Marissa Kump of Catharines, ON, Aleda Kawalek of Welland, ON, Sarah Rothwell of Listowel, ON, Julie Calvert of Burlington, ON, Kathleen Morrison of Mississauga, ON, Meghan Robinson of Bowen Island, BC, Luce Bourbeau of Iles-de-la Madeleine, QC, Nicole Hare of Calgary, AB, and coxswain Ellen Fawcett of St. Catharines, ON.
