July 27, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The Intermediate Shamrocks and New Westminster Salmonbellies took the floor at Bear Mountain Arena Saturday in a winner-take-all battle for a berth in the Provincials next weekend.
After two very close games, a 9-7 win at home and an 8-7 overtime loss on the road, the Rocks saved their best for last, coming out on the winning end of a 17-9 score. The game was close through the first 2 periods, Victoria holding period leads of 4-1 and 9-7 before they hit the floor running with 5 straight goals to start period 3 and kept it going to win the period 8-2.
Leading the way unofficially for the Intermediate Shamrocks was their leading scorer McLean Chicquen with 2 goals and 6 assists. Matt Hamilton had 4 goals and Cole Pickup chipped in the hat trick and 2 helpers. Graham Winship came up with a solid performance and scored twice, chipping in 2 assists. Other goals came from Adam Jay, Daniel Smith, Nick Preston, Nate Wade, Kevin Glanlfield and Jamie Jensen. Jordan Green contributed 3 assists and goaltender Liam Reid was strong between the pipes and also got an assist on the scoresheet.
The Intermediate Shamrocks prepare now to head to Maple Ridge over the long weekend. Other participants are yet to be determined as the other 3 series are still in progress.
On the bad news side of things, the Jr. Rocks dropped game 3 of their semi final series in Coquitlam by a 10-5 score, ending their season and the chance for a Minto Cup. Both Coquitlam and New Westminster will advance to the Minto beginning August 17 in New West.
