July 29, 2013, MONTREAL (ISN) – Etobicoke Swimming placed first overall in the team standings as the pool portion of the 2013 Canadian Age Group Swimming Championships concluded on Sunday night.
Etobicoke collected 41 medals including 19 gold for 2067.5 points to finish ahead of the Pointe-Claire Swim Club in second at 1,898 and the Oakvile Aquatic Club in third at 1,622. Etobicoke was also first in the men’s standings with Oakville second and Pointe-Claire third while Pointe-Claire took the women’s banner ahead of Etobicoke and Oakville.
Olivia Anderson led Etobicoke with four gold medals while Meryn McCann stepped on the podium five times with three gold and two silver. Both swim in the 14-year-old age group.
Singh Tai Long of Delta, B.C., was the individual star with eight gold medals in the 13 and under age group while Ellie Maradyn of Edmonton was the top girl with five gold and a bronze in the 12 and under.
For many young swimmers this was their first experience against a national field. That’s the case for Maradyn who finished the meet with gold medals and personal best times in the 200-m individual medley and 400-m freestyle on Sunday.
”I didn’t expect the racing to be this fast,” Maradyn said. ”It’s the most pressure I’ve ever felt at a meet but I liked it. It’s great to push yourself to your limits and have your teammates cheering you on.”
The open water races are set for Monday at the nearby Olympic rowing basin at 9 a.m.
