July 30, 2013, WINNIPEG, Manitoba (ISN) – The Winnipeg-based National Women’s Volleyball Team has recently confirmed that it will play host to the Peruvian Women’s National Team for a series of matches August 20 to 23.
This exhibition series will be a great precursor to the NORCECA Continental Championship, September 16 to 21 in Omaha, Nebraska. This NORCECA Continental Championship occurs every two years and includes the top nine teams from the NORCECA (North, Central America and Caribbean) Zone. For Peru, it will help them prepare for the South American Championship in September, which they are hosting.
“I am very pleased that we can play these matches against Peru as it is a long summer with a lot of training,” said Canadian Head Coach Arnd Ludwig. “It gives us a competition opportunity to help prepare for the NORCECA Championship. We played them twice, winning both times, but over the past couple years, the record with Peru is pretty even so we will have interesting and close games.”
Canada (ranked 22nd in the world) and Peru (ranked 17th) faced each other in this year’s annual Pan Am Cup competition in June. Canada was victorious in both matches, winning the first 3-2, and the second 3-0.
These teams will face each other twice in Winnipeg, and once in Dauphin, Manitoba, as follows:
Match #1: Tuesday, August 20 at 7pm at the Investors Group Athletic Centre, University of Manitoba
Match #2: Wednesday, August 21 at 7pm at the Dauphin Regional Comprehensive Secondary School
Match #3: Friday, August 23 at 7pm at the Investors Group Athletic Centre, University of Manitoba
“We are all very excited to play Peru again,” said Canadian captain Brittney Page. “Peru is a team that fights and claws until the very end of every game. I think both teams bring out so much intensity and competitiveness in each other. It’ll be a great opportunity to sustain a high competitive level throughout an entire series. And above all we can’t wait to play on our home court!”
