Excitement Builds as 2013 World Youth Climbing Championships Just Two Weeks Away

July 31, 2013, Central Saanich, BC (ISN) – Excitement is building as the Boulders Climbing Gym prepares to host the 2013 International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) World Youth Championships from August 15-19, 2013.

Over 400 athletes from approximately 35 countries, along with an estimated 2,000 spectators are expected to attend this world class event, making it the largest sporting event happening in the Greater Victoria Region this summer.

“I am extremely thankful for all the efforts of our volunteers in getting ready for this event,” said The Boulders Board Chair and Event Organizer Kimanda Jarzebiak.  “We are all looking forward to welcoming the world to the Boulders and to watching these amazing young athletes compete on the international stage.”

The event begins at 8:00 pm on Thursday August 15th with Opening Ceremonies.  On Friday and Saturday, August 16th and 17th, the qualifying rounds in the lead/difficulty climbing category will begin at 9:30 am on both days and continue until complete.  Sunday the 18th is the Speed Climbing day, with practice rounds beginning at 8:30 am and qualifying rounds at Noon.  Finals will start at 4:30 pm.  On Monday, semi-finals for lead/difficulty begin at 9:30 am, with the finals beginning at 4:30 pm.  The Awards and Closing Ceremonies begin at 7:30 pm.

In addition to the climbing competition, a marketplace will be set up at the venue, featuring local foods and crafts for everyone in attendance.

The Boulders Climbing Gym is adjacent to Stelly’s Secondary School in Central Saanich (1627 Stelly’s Cross Road).  Admission to all events on Thursday through Sunday is free.  There will be a $5 daily admission fee for the semi-finals and finals on Monday the 19th. Free parking is available at the school but will be limited. Additional parking will be available at Centennial Park or Brentwood Bay Elementary, both a ten minute walk from the school.

To prepare for the championships, a number of teams will be arriving in early August to begin training sessions at the Boulders. The Swiss team will arrive at the Boulders August 2nd for their first of five training sessions, while the 40+ United States contingent will arrive on August 5th,  and train August 6th-8th and again on August 12th.  Team Canada will arrive for training sessions on August 11th and 12th.
