August 4, 2013, Saskatoon (ISN) – Faith Zacharias of London, Ont., and Erin Field of Pointe-Claire, Que., were double winners on Saturday to open the 2013 Speedo Junior Development Nationals diving competition at the Shaw Centre.
Competing in the 12-13 age group, Zacharias won the gold medal on one-metre with 303.40 and on platform with 323.95. In both events Olivia Chamandy of Montreal was second.
“It feels really good to have won two national championships today,” said Zacharias. “The tower isn’t usually my best board so I am very happy to have done so well. I feel that the 1-metre competition went well today with my placing and my score, but I know that I could have done a few of my dives a little better.”
In the 11 and under age group, Field took the one-metre crown at 264.90 and the platform at 258.45. Brooklyn White of Edmonton was second on platform and third on one-metre.
“Some of my compulsories weren’t the best today, but my optionals were really consistent,” said Field, 11. “It feels great to have won both events today. I was hoping to come top-three on all three boards here and make the Pan Am Junior team.”
The competition is a qualifying meet for the Junior Pan Am Championships next month in Tuscon, Arizona.
Other victors were Joshua Inglis of London 0n the boys 12-13 three-metre and Rylan Wiens of Saskatoon in the boys 11 and under three-metre.
Competition ends Sunday.
